Fall Prevention Week 18-22 June 2012
Falls represent a serious problem for older people; they occur in around 30% of over 65s and 50% of those aged over 80 every year, often resulting in serious consequences, both physically and psychologically. In addition to bruising, fractures, and in some cases, death, a fall can destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence.
Falls Awareness Week aims to promote the services and interventions that can help older people to reduce their risk of falls and challenge common perception that falling is an inevitable part of ageing. This year, Age UK will be using the theme of 'Boost your Bones' to promote specific messages around bone health, including:
- Eating a balanced diet rich in calcium
- Getting enough Vitamin D through sunshine
- Doing regular strength and balance exercise
The Falls Awareness Week 2012 action pack will give you examples of the types of organisations that get involved and the activities they run, to inspire you with ideas for your own event. It also details how to register your event, order promotional materials and receive support from Age UK.
