Are You Ready For Winter?
Date: 05/12/2011
Most of us have now experienced our first fall of snow this winter, and it would be wise to get prepared for further bad weather now.
Preparing your home
- If cold weather is forecast and during a cold snap keep your heating on at a low temperature to help prevent pipes from freezing
- Know where your stop valve is and how to turn off your water
- Know how to turn off your electricity supply at the main
- Check the terms of your household contents insurance policy and consider taking out insurance if you don't have any (Insuring Your Contents)
- Keep a shovel and some salt/grit at home for clearing paths and find out where your nearest Local Authority public grit bin is located
- Making your home energy efficient will make it cheaper and quicker to heat during cold weather. For advice on how best to use your heating system, or any other energy matter you can contact Sandy Black, Home Energy Advisor at Scottish Borders Council on 01835 825169 or email sblack@scotborders.gov.uk
If you would like advice on any of the above, please contact us on 0845 604 3733 and we'll be happy to help
Helping others in your community
Please keep an eye out for neighbours who may need a helping hand during severe weather. Clearing snow from paths or delivering food and other supplies can really make a difference.
