Scottish Social Housing Charter
Date: 18/04/2012
In our newsletter before Christmas we updated our tenants on the Scottish Social Housing Charter and what it means for them.
The Government received over 200 responses to its consultation on the Charter from housing associations, councils, tenants' organisations and individual people too. There was a lot of concern about what landlords were going to have to do in order to meet all 71 outcomes contained in the consultation document.
The Government listened to what people were saying and reduced the outcomes to 16. The Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee of the Scottish Parliament then considered the Charter and the government's plans and they gathered evidence from different organisations such as the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) and tenants' organisations. The Committee's role was to decide if the Charter was in the right shape and will do what it is supposed to do. The final Scottish Social Housing Charter was approved by Parliament in March and will be formally introduced in April 2012.
Just as a reminder - there will be a new requirement for landlords, including Eildon, to involve tenants in assessing how well they are performing. This is called "self assessment" or "tenant scrutiny".
