If you receive certain benefits you may get a Cold Weather Payment for each period of very cold weather in your area. These payments are not affected by savings and are paid in the same way benefit payments are made e.g. income directly into a bank account.
Who can get Cold Weather Payments?
You are eligible for a Cold Weather Payment if you get one of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Pension Credit (either guarantee or savings)
If you get Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance (income-related) during the assessment phase or Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, you must also receive a pensioner or disability premium or have a child who is disabled or under the age of 5.
Payments are made automatically to help with the extra costs associated with exceptionally cold weather over an extended period between 1st November and the 31st March. The temperatures are gathered by a network of weather stations covering the UK.
Payments will be made if:
- For 7 consecutive days an average temperature of 0°C or below is forecasted.
- For 7 consecutive days an average temperature of 0°C or below is recorded.
