Are you interested in setting up your own group in your area? We are here to help you! Having your own tenant or resident group is just one way that you can keep involved with your landlord, and the area in which you live.
Find out if there is already a group in your area by checking our current Tenant Groups.
Why start up a tenant or residents group?
There are lots of reasons to want to have a tenants or residents group in your area, for example you might want to:
- Discuss a particular housing issue with your landlord
- Get more involved in influencing decisions that are made about your area
- Work for an improvement in your area
- Organise a community event
What should I do to set up a group?
- First, talk to your neighbours and find out what the main issues are that you want to address or find out if they are interested in your idea. Alternatively, you could conduct a short survey to find out the views of your neighbours. All you need to set up a group is a minimum of three interested people!
- If you find that other people are interested in your idea, you can then arrange to meet together to discuss and plan your ideas further. If you can, meet in a local known venue and remember to advertise your meeting!
- At the meeting, take an accurate note of the points that were discussed, and take a record of all that attended your meeting. Try to encourage people to form a small committee with you - this will help you plan the next stages.
What else should I know?
- Once you know there is interest in your area to have a tenants or residents group, it is important that you and your committee put together a constitution for your group. This is a document that states what your group aims to achieve, and how the group is going to work to achieve its aims.
