CARE HOME FOR OLDER PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA

The service opened in 1996 in partnership with Health and Social Work to meet the housing and care needs of older people with severe dementia.

Aims of the service
92-96 Craw Wood was purpose-built to provide 24-hour care for older people with dementia. The service aims to maximise the quality of life of residents by providing a homely setting and consistent care to meet the physical, domestic, personal and social needs of each person.

Every effort is made to maintain the dignity and individuality of the residents, recognising their rights to personal choice, self expression, freedom and privacy.

The level and type of care is adjusted to meet needs as they change and to avoid, if possible, the need for a further move. However, if ongoing nursing care or intensive medical treatment is needed, or if dementia stops being the main focus of need, a move to hospital or other care setting may be necessary. The service works in conjunction with psychiatric and other health services.

Every effort is made to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents. All accidents and incidents are monitored and risk assessments are regulary reviewed.

As well as being a long-term home for some residents, Craw Wood also provides respite breaks to help meet the needs of carers of people with dementia.

What facilities and services are available?
Craw Wood consists of three houses, each with its own living/dining room, kitchen, a large bathroom and toilet. The houses are grouped around a landscaped garden and there is a pleasant conservatory for the use of all residents.

All residents have their own bedroom with en-suite facilities.

The main kitchen provides a wide variety and choice of meals and each person's dietary needs are taken into account.

There is no set routine and residents can get up and go to bed whenever they choose and keep to their own routines. Staff members know each resident's preferences.

The service is staffed at all times, day and night.

Staff members are well trained, experienced and qualified and, most of all, they are approachable and willing to help as much as they can.

Residents' interests are taken into consideration in arranging activities, outings and events. These can include walks, tea dances, singsongs, trips to shopping centres, the hairdresser, church, visits to local restaurants, garden centres and parks, reminiscence sessions, dominoes, musical evenings, concerts, and amateur operettas.

Residents who wish to smoke will be supervised to do so in the garden.

There are no set visiting times, relative are welcome to visit residents at Craw Wood at any time and are free to take residents for out for lunch, a coffee or a visit.

Residents can choose to have their laundry looked after by our laundry or by their own carer.

Who can apply?
The service is for older people with severe dementia who live in or have a connection with the central Scottish Borders. Dependency levels and care needs vary from person to person. A psychiatric assessment is required for all applications. Eildon works closely with colleagues in Social Work and the Health Service to allocate places.

What is it likely to cost?
Charges will depend on individual circumstances. Scottish Borders Council - Social Work staff in your local Social Work office should be able to help you with queries about costs and eligibility.
