Aims of the service
This service aims to assist adults with learning disabilities to enjoy a high quality of life by providing long-term homes with support and care. It is based on the following principles:

""
People with learning disabilities are individuals and their particular needs and wishes should determine the care and support they receive.

Irrespective of their level of disability, people have a right to be treated with respect and to be supported in ways that maintain their dignity.

People have a right to make decisions and exercise control over their own lives within the limitations of their understanding and ability.

What facilities and services are available?
The home is registered with the Care Commission and consists of two adjacent shared bungalows, each for 6 residents. They are set in attractive grounds in a quiet area close to the town.

""
The accommodation is homely, modern and of a high standard.

All rooms are on the ground floor and accessible for wheelchair users.

Each resident has a single bedroom with a wash hand basin.

There is bath, a shower designed for easy access and an automatic toilet in each house.

Each house has a shared lounge and kitchen/dining room.

There is a washing machine and dryer in each house.

Meals are cooked on the premises and special diets can be catered for.

Trained and experienced members of staff are on duty at all times to provide assistance as required in all areas of daily life, including personal care, domestic tasks, social and leisure activities.

Care plans are tailored to meet individual needs and wishes and are regularly reviewed.

The service is staffed at all times and a staff member sleeps overnight in each house

The Outreach Service based at Station Avenue visits people who live alone or with relatives or friends to provide care and/or support on an individually arranged basis.

Who can apply?
The services are specifically for adults with learning disabilities who live in or have a connection with the Duns area.

The care home accommodation is offered on a long-term basis, and vacancies do not arise very often. Applications are usually made by a Social Worker, since a full Community Care Assessment will normally be needed.

How much is it likely to cost?
The charge for a place in the care home will depend on individual circumstances. A Social Worker would need to carry out a financial assessment to determine how much any individual would need to pay. Most residents receive benefits that fully cover their contribution and Scottish Borders Council pays the balance.
