Borders Care & Repair celebrates 20 years
Did you know that our Borders Care & Repair team is celebrating 20 years of dedicated service?
Working closely with key partner, Scottish Borders Council (SBC), the team have made a significant contribution over the last 20 years. With over £13.8 million pounds worth of adaptations made to homes, they’ve ensured older Borders residents can continue to live independent and productive lives.
We had a recent home adaptation when a client was referred to the service following an assessment by SBC’s Occupational Therapist. The client was a recent amputee and was no longer able to access their existing step-in shower cubicle to independently wash. They owned their own home, were in their mid-60’s and the property was otherwise suitable to meet their long-term needs.
Borders Care & Repair worked on behalf of this client to prepare a plan and specification for a new shower room to meet their needs and be fully accessible.

Bathroom before adaptations
Due to the size of the room, a wet floor shower option was agreed, reconfiguring the room to maximise space to access the WC, sink and shower area. A small ramp into the room was also required due to floor levels, to allow wheeled access. The client chose to pay for additional wall boarding to fully cover the whole room for a higher spec finish.
Borders Care & Repair arranged for the works to be estimated by the client’s choice of contractor from the list and applied for grant funding from Scottish Borders Council on behalf of the client. The client was awarded an 80% grant contribution towards the adaptation cost.

After the adaptation – wet floor shower room
We’re extremely proud of the result and the client was delighted. He said the work will enable them to continue to live independently in their home and that they are less anxious about their safety. They rated the overall service provided by Care & Repair as “Very Good”.
